Dec 4 (Reuters) - Following are statements made by John Bolton during his 15 months as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations:

- "It's a target-rich environment." -- on what he enjoyed most about his job as U.N. ambassador, Britain's Sunday Telegraph, Nov. 6, 2005.

- "U.N. reform is not a one-night stand. U.N. reform is forever." -- Aug. 11, 2005.

- "We want a butterfly. We're not going to put lipstick on a caterpillar and declare it a success." - on U.N. efforts to replace its discredited Human Rights Commission with a new Human Rights Council.

- "Starting on time is a form of discipline. I brought the gavel down at 10. I was the only one in the room though." -- at the start of the U.S. presidency of the Security Council, Feb. 3, 2006.

- "The U.N. is one of many competitors in a marketplace of global problem solving ... and we have to decide whether a particular issue is best done through some other mechanism." -- interview with the Washington Times, Nov. 15, 2005.

- "Indeed, it is in fact time for a wholesale change in the culture of how many agencies and entities within the U.N. system operate. ... Whether it is a culture of inaction or a culture of impunity, we must see changes." -- on the need for U.N. procurement reform, Feb. 22, 2006.

- "People criticize us when we take action on the ground that our taking action makes the situation worse. So what is the answer -- not to take action?" --commenting on a draft U.S. Security Council resolution on Somalia, Dec. 1, 2006.

Leader of Somalia Islamic Courts Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys (R) and European Union aid chief Louis Michel hold talks in Somalia's capital Mogadishu December 20, 2006. Somali Islamists and troops defending the government's only stronghold battled with rockets and heavy weapons on Wednesday at two frontline areas, but Sheikh Aweys denied it was the start of war.
