US to drop charges against Cole bombing suspect

WASHINGTON, Feb 5 (Reuters) - The judge overseeing U.S. military commissions is expected on Friday to dismiss charges against a suspect held at Guantanamo Bay over the bombing of the U.S. Navy warship USS Cole, a U.S. defense official said. The decision would allow the commissions system to comply with an order by President Barack Obama that proceedings be suspended, but the suspect, Saudi national Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, would remain at Guantanamo and could be recharged at a later date, the official told Reuters on Thursday.
