TORONTO, July 7 (Reuters) - A Canadian military medic was killed over the weekend when an explosive device detonated in the Panjwayi District during an early morning security patrol in Afghanistan.

Private Colin William Wilmot received first aid immediately after the blast early on July 5, and was evacuated by helicopter to a medical facility at Kandahar Airfield, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Forces said in a statement.

Wilmot, whose age was not disclosed, was based in Edmonton, Alberta and was not originally scheduled to be deployed to the battlefield, but lobbied for the job and succeeded, the Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

Wilmot was serving with the Health Services Support Unit in Afghanistan attached to 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group. (Reporting by Jennifer Kwan; Editing by Bernadette Baum)
