KABUL, Jan 7 (Reuters) - A suicide bomber severely wounded five Afghan policemen in an attack in the southern province of Kandahar on Monday, a provincial official said.

In a separate incident, two Canadian soldiers in the region died on Sunday when their armored vehicle overturned while trying to cross difficult terrain, officials in Ottawa said on Monday.

Taliban insurgents killed hundreds of civilians in suicide raids targeting Afghan and international troops across the country in 2007, the bloodiest year in Afghanistan since their ousting in 2001.

Border police official Razaq Khan said the bomber had approached the vehicle on foot in the Spin Boldak area bordering Pakistan, a hotbed of Taliban activity.

The two Canadian soldiers died in the Nalgham region, about 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Kandahar, where Canada has a 2,500-strong military base.

Since the Canadian mission started in 2002, 76 Canadian soldiers and one diplomat have died. (Reporting by Hamid Shalizi and David Ljunggren; Editing by David Fox, Alex Richardson and Peter Galloway)
