Strong quake hits Papua New Guinea -USGS

WASHINGTON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake with 6.3 magnitude struck the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.The Pacific Tsunami Center said there was no threat of a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami but it said earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis.The temblor, which occurred at 12:38 p.m. EST (1738 GMT) on Tuesday, or 3:38 a.m. local time on Wednesday, was centered about 340 miles (550 km) northeast of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, USGS said.
