MEXICO CITY, April 10 (Reuters) - Police arrested two men on Tuesday who are suspected in the shooting death of a reporter in the Pacific resort of Acapulco last week.

Federal cops doing routine checks stopped a car and found a pistol in the back which was like the one used to kill Televisa correspondent Amado Ramirez last Friday, the attorney general's office said in a statement.

The men, whose car had been pulled over near a popular tourist beach, were arrested for weapons possession. Witnesses brought to the police station identified one of them as the person who shot Ramirez as he left a radio interview, according to the statement.

The other man is also suspected of involvement in the murder, the attorney general's office said.

Acapulco, made famous by the Hollywood jet-set in the 1950s, is long past its prime. The city has been swamped by drug violence in recent years, with beheadings and daylight attacks on police stations not uncommon.

Since he took office in December, President Felipe Calderon has launched an army offensive to tackle feuding drug gangs.

Despite the clampdown, more than 600 people have been murdered in gangland killings across the country so far this year, according to media reports. No official statistics are available.

Mexican journalists, especially along the violent border with the United States, have often been targeted by drug smugglers after reporting on links between the gangs and government or police officials.
