RALEIGH, N.C., Feb 13 (Reuters) - A former CIA contractor was sentenced to 100 months in prison on Tuesday for assaulting an Afghan prisoner who later died.

A U.S. judge in Raleigh, North Carolina, sentenced David Passaro to 100 months on a felony count of assault causing serious injury and six months each on three misdemeanor counts of simple assault, to run concurrent with the 100-month sentence.

Passaro was convicted last August of beating Abdul Wali, who died of his injuries two days after a June 2003 interrogation.

Passaro was the first civilian to be charged with abusing a detainee in the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Militants entered the Golden Mosque in the Iraqi city of Samarra at dawn exactly one year ago, setting off charges that destroyed the dome of the revered Shi'ite shrine. The act sparked a wave of sectarian bloodshed that has pushed Iraq close to all-out civil war.
