Colombia says rebels bomb two hotels, kill one

BOGOTA, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Colombian FARC guerrillas set off bombs at two small hotels in a southern city, killing one man and wounding at least 11 people in a rare urban attack, authorities said on Monday.

Colombia's four-decade conflict has ebbed as a U.S.-backed offensive by President Alvaro Uribe's government has driven the guerrillas back into the jungles and mountains. Bombings in cities have dropped off as the FARC has weakened.

Police said preliminary evidence from the explosives used indicated militias from the FARC were responsible for the bombing late on Sunday in Neiva city.

"The conclusion we have come to ... is that this was a terrorist act carried out by the FARC," National Police Gen. Orlando Paez told reporters.

The FARC, which began as a Marxist-inspired peasant army in the 1960s, has been hit by a series of blows this year, including the loss of three top commanders, a string of desertions and the rescue of several key hostages.

But Latin America's oldest guerrilla group, helped by finances from cocaine smuggling, still carries out attacks. The FARC was blamed for a bombing on a court building in Cali in September, which killed four people. (Reporting by Patrick Markey; editing by Mohammad Zargham)
