NEW YORK, July 18 (Reuters) - An explosion rocked midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, creating a huge plume of smoke and sending pedestrians fleeing from the scene, a Reuters eyewitness said.

New York City police said the explosion did not look suspicious and ABC-TV reported that it was as a transformer explosion.
