BOGOTA, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Colombia has named Fernando Araujo, who escaped six weeks ago from leftist rebels who kidnapped him in 2000, as its new foreign minister, the government said in a statement on Monday.

His appointment came hours after former foreign minister Maria Consuelo Araujo resigned following her brother's arrest on charges he helped finance illegal paramilitaries.

Fernando Araujo is no relation to the former foreign minister.
