WASHINGTON, Feb. 20 (Reuters) - A major earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on Wednesday and a local tsunami watch was in effect, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The tremor was centered about 198 miles (319 km) west-southwest of Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia, at a shallow depth of 21.7 miles (35 km), USGS said.
