SANTIAGO, April 22 (Reuters) - Chile's President Michelle Bachelet traveled to the south on Sunday where authorities were searching for 10 people who went missing after a large earthquake a day earlier.

The 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Chile's picturesque Aysen region on Saturday panicked local residents and caused power outages and landslides that stirred large waves off the coast.

Pictures in local newspapers on Sunday showed roads in the region split with large cracks down the middle following the quake that was the strongest of hundreds to hit Aysen in recent months.

The quake caused chunks of land to fall into the ocean, causing large waves, but not a tsunami, in an area where there are salmon farms.

"The Army has contributed a helicopter to efforts to find these (missing people)," the Chilean government said in a statement.

Saturday's quake was the strongest of hundreds to have struck the region in recent months. The length of Chile is prone to earthquakes.

Residents in the capital Santiago were woken at dawn by a 5.3 magnitude quake, but no damage was reported.
