(This FACTBOX supplements "Around globe, walls spring up to divide neighbors" [ID:nN25298747]) April 30 (Reuters) - A controversial project by American soldiers to divide neighborhoods in Baghdad has drawn attention to new and planned border walls and fences around the world, which exceed in length the defunct Iron Curtain. Here is a partial list: BAGHDAD - U.S. soldiers began building wall of 12 foot (3.5 metre) concrete slabs on April 10, planned for 3 miles (3.5 km) around Sunni district of Adhamiya JERUSALEM - Concrete wall up to 18 feet (5.5 metres) high, separates Arab east Jerusalem from West Bank. Planned to run 436 miles (700 km) and more than half complete. U.S.-MEXICO - Metal wall to prevent entry to United States seen as model for 700 miles (1,100 km) along 2,000 mile (3,200 km) U.S.-Mexico border PAKISTAN-INDIA - Barbed wire fences, fortifications along roughly half the 1,800 mile (2,900 km) border. Plans to fence off most of the border PAKISTAN-AFGHANISTAN - Pakistan has announced plans to wall and fence off Taliban routes along 1,500 mile (2,400 km) border. Preliminary work has begun on 20 miles (30 km) INDIA-BANGLADESH - Plans for fences to stop illegal trade and infiltrators along most of the 2,550 mile (4,000 km) frontier. Fence already in place between state of West Bengal and Bangladesh THAILAND-MALAYSIA - Planned 17-mile (27 km) wall to stop smuggling and illegal border crossing from Malaysia. Proposal to fence off entire 310 mile (500 km) border on hold MOROCCO-WESTERN SAHARA - Walls made of earth, rock and sand, stretching 1,700 miles (2700 km) between Morocco and Western Sahara. At least 200,000 mines seeded along the line CEUTA AND MELILLA-NORTHERN MOROCCO - Wealthy Spanish enclaves separated from Morocco by parallel fences 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 metres) high. Runs 7 miles (11 km). SAUDI ARABIA-YEMEN - Construction of wall consisting of pipelines filled with concrete begun in 2003, halted after protests a year later SAUDI ARABIA-IRAQ - Saudi Arabia has invited bids for 550 mile (900 km) high-tech barrier to prevent unrest spilling over from Iraq KUWAIT-IRAQ - Kuwait has built electrified fences, berms and a deep trench along its entire 135 mile (217 km) border (Compiled by Bernd Debusmann)
