(Please read in first paragraph senior security officials instead of President Felipe Calderon to comply with official correction from the Mexican government) MEXICO CITY, Feb 27 (Reuters) - U.S. drug czar John Walters met senior security officials on Tuesday to discuss Mexico's new military-backed assault on drug cartels, as well as ways to increase extradition of kingpins and limit illegal drug imports. During his first trip to Mexico, Walters also met with the Mexican Cabinet, although no new agreements were reached during the one-day visit, said a government official who declined to be named. "Walters discussed methods of improving our law enforcement cooperation to better fight the war on drugs, including increased extraditions and information sharing to combat drug cartels," Mexico's U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza said in a statement. Some 2,000 people were killed in drug violence in Mexico last year. Since taking office in December, Calderon has sent thousands of troops across Mexico to try to weaken drug cartels, winning praise from the United States, the main market for Latin American cocaine, marijuana and other illegal drugs.
