Cardinals pitcher dies in car wreck; game postponed

WASHINGTON, April 29 (Reuters) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock was killed in a car accident early on Sunday, the team said. The Cardinals' Sunday game against the Chicago Cubs was postponed because of the death. Hancock, 29, was a relief pitcher with a record of 0-1 and 3.55 ERA in eight games this season. He had pitched three innings in St. Louis' 8-1 loss to the Cubs on Saturday, giving up two hits and one run while striking out two. Hancock was a member of the Cardinals' World Series championship team last season, when he was 3-3 in 62 games. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch said Hancock died at the scene after his Ford Explorer ran into the rear end of a tow truck stopped on Highway 40 to help a disabled vehicle. The tow truck driver was in his vehicle at the time but was not injured, the newspaper said.
