Strong earthquake hits eastern Russia

WASHINGTON, May 30 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake hit Russia's far-eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Thursday morning local time, with a magnitude of 6.4, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site on Wednesday.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The USGS said the epicenter of the quake was nearly 120 km (75 miles) below ground and 130 km (80 miles) southwest of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy. The epicenter was nearly 2,300 km (1,430 miles) north-northeast of Tokyo, it said.
