DAMASCUS, June 14 (Reuters) - Syria on Thursday condemned the assassination of Lebanese legislator Walid Eido, saying it had nothing to do with the killing.

"Syria strongly denounces this crime and condemns the campaign of lies by some Lebanese used to accuse Syria after any killing and before an investigation even starts," a statement by the Foreign Ministry said.

Eido, a member in the majority anti-Syrian parliamentary bloc, was killed by a car bomb in Beirut on Wednesday. Saad al-Hariri, a leading anti-Syrian Lebanese politician, blamed Damascus for the killing.
