PARIS, Feb 2 (Reuters) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy has held talks with Chad's President Idriss Deby to discuss the current violence in Chad between government and rebel troops, Sarkozy's office said in a statement on Saturday. "The President of the French Republic has been assured that all measures have been taken to assure the safety of French nationals. He also held lengthy talks with President Deby," said the statement from the Elysee department. President Sarkozy also discussed the Chad situation with France's armed forces chief General Georgelin, foreign affairs minister Bernard Kouchner and defence minister Herve Morin. Chadian rebels seeking to overthrow Deby battled their way into the capital N'Djamena on Saturday and fought government troops around the presidential palace, diplomats and residents said. The Elysee statement added that Sarkozy would hold another meeting on Saturday to discuss the Chad situation. (Reporting by Sudip Kar-Gupta; Editing by Ibon Villelabetia)
