BEIJING, Feb 16 (Reuters) - China has contained an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in northwestern Qinghai province, a state newspaper reported on Friday.

Local authorities have culled 70 dairy cows after eight were found on Feb. 13 to be infected with Asia Type One foot and month disease, the Beijing News said, quoting the Ministry of Agriculture.

Foot-and-mouth disease does not affect humans and outbreaks are relatively easy to control, but the disease can have a serious impact on the livestock industry by reducing meat and milk production.

Outbreaks that resulted in the slaughter of more than 1,000 animals were reported around China last year.

As an important nature reserve for migratory birds in the territory, Mai Po is being increasingly polluted and choked up by industrial and organic waste flushed down from southern China, a leading green group said on February 27, 2007.
