Chinese court sentences police-run crime gang

BEIJING, March 23 (Reuters) - A Chinese court in the northeastern region of Inner Mongolia has sentenced 10 members of a police-run gang to up to 20 years in jail for robbery, rape, gambling and bribery, the official Xinhua news agency said. The gang was led by Su He, who was the Communist Party commissar at the Tumd Zuoqi Public Security Bureau, Xinhua said in an overnight report. He was "convicted of illegally controlling local government departments and collecting massive gains, with nine other policemen in the bureau over a period of more than 10 years", the report said. Su was given a 20-year sentence and fined 20,000 yuan ($2,589), it added. The gang set up a company as cover and accrued more than 3 million yuan from their illegal activities, Xinhua said. The other gang members included the heads of three police stations and three policemen, as well as a former police officer in charge of investigating economic crimes. ($1=7.724 Yuan)
