Mine mudslide kills 26 in northern China

BEIJING, Sept 8 (Reuters) - A mud and rock slide killed 26 people in northern China, after it triggered the collapse of a warehouse filled with mine waste early Monday morning, the official Xinhua agency said. The landslide also injured one person and trapped several others. Over 300 police and villagers were hunting for survivors in the rubble, Xinhua said. Top government officials rushed to the Tashan Mine, which is in northern Shanxi province, to direct the rescue efforts. China's mining industry is the world's deadliest, and last year killed nearly 3,800 people. Most are coal miners who die in flooding or explosions underground. Xinhua did not say what the Tashan mine produced. (Reporting by Emma Graham-Harrison; Editing by Jerry Norton)
