Athletes get into sorghum-based Olympic spirit

BEIJING, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Powerful local fire-waters and a scarlet, fermented beancurd will be on the menu for athletes at this year's Beijing Olympics, a state newspaper said on Thursday. Beijing Er Shang Group has already chosen more than 1,000 food and drink products to be served to the athletes, including the sorghum-based spirits Maotai, Erguotou and Wuliangye, the official Beijing Daily said. Also on the menu will be a strongly scented and flavoured scarlet-coloured fermented beancurd, the report added, citing company boss Sun Jie. Athletes will be able to buy specially packaged local specialities, he added. "Because they will be sold to athletes, their packaging will clearly be labelled with their fat, nutritional and protein content," the newspaper said. And to ensure freshness, all food for the day will be delivered in the early hours of the morning, it said. China has been beset by food safety worries, with problems reported on an almost daily basis. The government has pulled out all the stops to shore up public and international confidence in China's food supplies ahead of the Olympics, but doubts persist.
