SYDNEY, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Pressing institutional and structural problems are constraining China's economic development and "arduous efforts" are needed to maintain good growth, Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Thursday.

"There are still some pressing institutional and structural problems which constrain China's economic development and need to be addressed," Hu said at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Sydney.

"For instance, there is imbalance in international payments, pressure on resources and the environment is mounting, and there is an urgent need to conserve energy and cut pollutant discharge. We still need to make arduous efforts to make sure that China's economy continues a steady and fairly fast growth."

Children infected by HIV play Chinese chess at their dormitory in a red ribbon primary school in Linfen, north China's Shanxi province September 13, 2007. The school, operated by a hospital since 2004, provides cultural courses and lodging for eleven HIV infected children, aged 7 to 12. China reported 18,543 new cases of HIV/AIDS in the first half of this year, state media said, near the number for the whole of 2006.
