KABUL, Dec 23 (Reuters) - U.S. forces said on Saturday they had killed one of the Taliban's top four leaders -- the man leading fighting in the south where the mounting insurgency is strongest.

Akhtar Mohammad Osmani and two other guerrillas were killed in an air strike near the Pakistan border on Tuesday, said a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition force, describing him as close to Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar and having links to Osama bin Laden.

Taliban fighters have stepped up attacks from Pakistan into Afghanistan and are taking advantage of a deal between the Pakistani government and local tribes that was billed as an effort to reduce the threat, U.S. military officials said on Tuesday.
