NEW DELHI, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Police arrested two suspected Muslim militants in New Delhi with explosives as part of efforts to keep the capital safe ahead of India's Republic Day on Jan. 26, a senior police officer said on Wednesday. "We have recovered 1.6 kg (3.5 lb) of explosives, detonators, timers and have also got 4.5 lakh rupees (450,000 rupees or $1,021) from them," Alok Kumar of New Delhi police's anti-terrorist cell told Reuters. The men whose names Kumar gave as Mohammad Amin Wani from Kashmir and Lutuful Rahman from Bangladesh were arrested on Jan. 4, based on specific intelligence. Kumar said they were being interrogated for possible strikes in the capital ahead of Republic Day national holiday which marks the day in 1950 when India adopted its constitution and became a republic. There is a huge military and cultural parade in New Delhi on Jan. 26. Russian President Vladimir Putin is the chief guest this year. Police have stepped up their vigil to thwart possible attacks on Republic Day by Islamist militants fighting Indian rule in restive Kashmir or by Maoist guerrillas. Last year, Maoists set off bombs in eastern India on Jan. 26, killing two people. As part of an anti-terrorism drive in the teeming capital of 14 million people, police arrested 39 landlords on Tuesday for failing to provide details about their tenants as they must.
