PAGHMAN - The governor of Logar province, a former cabinet minister under President Hamid Karzai, was killed on Saturday in a remote-controlled blast by Taliban insurgents outside his house on the western outskirts of Kabul, police said.

Abdullah Wardak, two bodyguards and a driver lost their lives when the device hit his armoured vehicle.

GHAZNI - Taliban insurgents beheaded three men after accusing them of spying for the government overnight in Ghazni province, an official said on Saturday.

HELMAND - A soldier from the NATO-led force was killed while on patrol in an attack in southern Helmand on Friday, the alliance said.

HERAT - Five rockets landed near a U.N. compound in western Herat late on Friday, but caused no casualties or damages, an official said. The strike came hours after authorities cancelled flights from the province's only airport following a similar attack the previous night.
