TOKYO, July 24 (Reuters) - A building was reported on fire in northern Japan after the area was hit early on Thursday by a strong earthquake with preliminary magnitude of 6.8, public broadcaster NHK reported.

TV showed fire trucks apparently on their way to the scene of the fire in a city about 550 km northeast of Tokyo, but there was no immediate information on the scale of the blaze.
