WASHINGTON, July 3 (Reuters) - The United States said on Tuesday it would not oppose the release of a small portion of 50,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil due to North Korea under a nuclear disarmament deal before Pyongyang shuts down its Yongbyon nuclear reactor.

"Our understanding is that the North Koreans have asked for some small portion of that overall 50,000 tonnes earlier on in the process," said U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack. "From our view, this is ... something that we don't oppose."

Mining machinery is pictured in a flooded factory in North Kwanghae Province in North Korea in this photo released by the Korea News Service on August 15, 2007. North Korean authorities have indicated flooding may have left up to 300,000 people homeless, a U.N. aid agency spokesman said on Wednesday, while the communist state warned of a poor harvest this year due to the heavy rain.
