Location: Nairobi

WFP’s helicopter operation to help hundreds of thousands of east African flood victims swung into action over the weekend with a four ton delivery of emergency supplies to Gurufa in northeastern Kenya amid fears of further rains.

Two other helicopters ferried aid from Nairobi to the southern Somali town of Wajid.

WFP aims to provide aid to 2.7 million Kenyans for the next three months – an increase of 300,000 people.

Rains continue

Up to 160,000 mostly Somali refugees in northern Kenyan camps which have been cut off by floodwaters will receive rations for 14 days.

With rains expected to continue through to January WFP urgently requires donations for the expected expansion of its special air operation.

Donations so far include US$5.5 million from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund and US$240,000 from Switzerland for WFP's US$11.4 million air operation.
