Location:
Oberstaufen Over 100 vintage cars rolled out of Oberstaufen in Germany today, officially beginning the second 5,000-kilometre Allgaeu-Orient Rally against Hunger.
Over the next eight days, some 137 drivers and 65 cars will help raise funds to fight the world's biggest threat to health by racing through 11 countries in one of the world's last remaining automobile adventures.
Proceeds
After crossing the finish line on May 26, most of the cars will be donated to the Jordanian National Alliance Against Hunger (JNAAH) and auctioned or sold for scrap. Proceeds will help fund JNAAH projects, including income-generating activities, capacity building, housing for the homeless, and food for the poor.
In addition to these funds, each participant will donate Euros 50 to the JNNAH when they reach Jordan.
Last year's first Germany-Jordan rally raised US$51,000.
Highways
Avoiding major highways, half of the competitors will travel through Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey with the other half following an alternative route through Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Turkey.
All the cars are due to reach Syria on May 24, before travelling on to their final destination in Jordan.
Winner
The first car to cross the finish line will not automatically win the race's first-prize of a camel. En route to Jordan, teams are also required to fulfill the following tasks:
- take grass from Oberstaufen to feed the camel;
- have their picture taken with a football team;
- collect a national recipe in each country visited during the rally;
- take four pictures with people in uniform (football players, basketball team, police team, etc);
- buy a souvenir in each country visited and have a picture taken with the shop owner as well as the receipt stamped;
- travel by sea with the cars and take a picture with the car on the boat;
- drive 50-60 km per day;
- never exceed a two-star hotel.
A reception for the participants will be held on 1 June 2007, under the patronage of HRH Princess Basma Bint Talal, at the Athletic City in Amman, Jordan.
