The World Food Programme (WFP) said it is purchasing 1.6 million packs of ready-to-eat noodles for survivors of the earthquake that struck Sichuan province on Monday – enough to feed 118,000 people for one week.

The packs of noodles will be added to larger food parcels being distributed by the Red Cross in Mianyang city, where tens of thousands of people have taken refuge.

“This is a symbol of our solidarity with the people of China. We stand ready to help in any way,” said Josette Sheeran, WFP's Executive Director, speaking from the agency's Rome headquarters.

WFP is working in close collaboration with the United Nations Disaster Management Team (UNDMT) and the Chinese Government to assist the victims in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale, and killed tens of thousands.
