WFP welcomes the continuing support of the Federal Government of Germany with new contributions totalling €22.55 million from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

WFP’s new Executive Director, Josette Sheeran, and Ambassador Hans-Heinrich Wrede, Germany’s Permanent Representative, signed a contract in Rome today.

The contributions will go towards relief and recovery operations as well as to development projects, thus underlining Germany’s continuing support to both fields of work under WFP’s dual mandate.

Relief operations

Germany is providing WFP with €11.05 million for protracted relief and recovery operations of which the biggest contribution (€2 million) goes to WFP’s largest programme in Sudan – especially Darfur.

The German Government also supports other important WFP operations, e.g. in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique and Somalia, as well as in Cambodia and North Korea. With contributions towards WFP operations in Angola and Myanmar, Germany is also supporting some of the so-called “forgotten crises”.

WFP will receive another €11.5 million for its development programmes.

Cash

This includes WFP support for school feeding and education and training for women and girls. WFP also advises governments on national systems for food security.

These multilateral contributions enable WFP to react flexibly to particular needs.

All German contributions are in cash, which allows WFP to purchase food quickly and efficiently, preferably at local or regional markets. Consequently local economies benefit while much-needed food quickly reaches those people who are suffering.

The Federal Government of Germany is among WFP’s top ten donors; alongside other nations, Germany assists WFP in reaching about 90 million hungry people in more than 80 countries each year.
