Location: RomeThe United Nations World Food Programme today welcomed a first-ever donation of US$10,000 from the Republic of Croatia.
“We are very pleased to have Croatia on our list of donors and look forward to the further development of our partnership,” said Josette Sheeran, WFP Executive Director.
“We anticipate forging an even stronger relationship in the years ahead.”
The funds are multilateral and untied, which means they can be used in any operation which WFP deems most in need of resources. Such flexibility is especially welcome in view of the periodic shortfalls WFP faces in providing food assistance to the most needy.
Family of donor countriesThe Croatian Ambassador to Italy, Tomislav Vidoševiæ, said that in attaching high importance to UN affairs, the Republic of Croatia was glad to be joining WFP’s family of donor countries.
“The Croatian Government is fully aware of the crucial role of WFP operations in combating hunger in the numerous emergencies around the world.
Millennium Development
The Republic of Croatia also attaches great importance to the Millennium Development Goals and hopes that the target to reduce world hunger by half by 2015 will be achieved,” said Tomislav Vidoševiæ.
This first-ever contribution from Croatia to WFP follows a first visit to its Rome headquarters by the country’s State Secretary at the Foreign Ministry earlier this year.
