Demonstrators hold up banners during a protest in Kerbala, 110 km (70 miles) south of Baghdad, March 24, 2007. Thousands of displaced families took to the streets in Kerbala on Saturday, demonstrating against a government decision to ask them to move out from the government buildings they have occupied. The banner on the left reads, "Be merciful with our families, our children and our women, protect them from the tractor." The banner on the right reads, "Iraq is for all, so why do you want us to leave the land of the prophets?"

A stand off between President Viktor Yushchenko and his rival Yanukovich has deepened as both men declined to back down over the president's call for a new parliamentary election.
