Residents of Rio hold crosses during a protest against violence at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro July 26, 2009. The NGO Rio de Paz (Peace Rio) held the protest on the beach with the relatives of victims of violence. Famous for its beaches and the "biggest party in the world" at Carnival time, Brazil's second-biggest city is plagued by a vast gap between rich and poor that helps breed violent crime, including a huge drug trade, murders and assaults.
