Bolivian demonstrator lies in a hunger strike in Santa Cruz
13 Dec 2006
Source: Reuters

A Bolivian demonstrator lies in a hunger strike to demand autonomy and "2/3" in the voting rules for the constituent assembly in Santa Cruz, December 13, 2006. Bolivia, South America's poorest country, is roughly divided along ethnic and economic lines, with the eastern lowlands home to more European- descended people and rich in natural gas resources, while indigenous-dominated western highlands are relatively poorer and strongly back President Morales. The banners reads at (top left) "Attention Evo, Santa Cruz is angry, autonomy, now" (top center) " Autonomy for all Bolivians".

A Bolivian soldier stands guard in front of Vinto smelter complex in Oruro, some 210 km (130 miles) south of La Paz, February 9, 2007. Bolivia's government on Friday seized control of a tin smelter complex owned by the Swiss-based Glencore company, with President Evo Morales saying no compensation would be paid immediately.
