Vietnam's epidemic is less advanced than its Southeast Asian neighbours Cambodia and Thailand, but the United Nations estimates there are at least 280,000 HIV infections in a population of 84 million. On January 1, 2007, a new law comes into effect that experts say is a broad policy framework for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment in underdeveloped Vietnam.
