Amazon timber are placed in a pile to be fed into brick ovens to make charcoal, in spite of the imminent arrival of government environmental inspectors and federal policemen who are expected to destroy thousands of the ovens in the region starting tomorrow, near Tailandia, 180 km (112 miles) south of Belem, at the mouth of the Amazon River, February 26, 2008. Brazil launched a massive operation called Arch of Fire aimed at fighting deforestation in the Amazon, a week after townspeople clashed with police that had seized timber from illegal sawmills.
