| Description: | Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar with devastating impact. The estimated death toll as of 24 May is over 130,000 people dead or missing. It is estimated that 2.4 million people were affected by Cyclone Nargis in 40 townships (including urban Yangon). Of these 40 townships, 15 are considered worst affected in the sense that a high percentage of people living in these townships are in need. There remain smaller percentages of extreme need in other affected areas. In 11 of the 15 the worst affected townships, of more than 3,500 villages, nearly 1,400 were severely destroyed (extensive loss of life and property). In these 11 townships alone, the number of homeless is more than 660,000 (35% of the affected population). While temporary settlements/shelters are housing some of the homeless, the majority (80%) of the homeless are living with relatives or on their own plot of land. Save the Children has mounted a large child-focussed humanitarian response with activities in 14 of the 15 worst-affected townships. The response includes activities in: food, shelter, health, WASH, child protection, education, livelihoods and nutrition. Save the Children expects to complete the bulk of its cyclone response activities by mid 2010. includes activities in: food, shelter, health, WASH, child protection, education, livelihoods and nutrition.
