Save the Children's origins lie in emergency response and it has remained central to our work ever since. Our approach integrates our emergency and development work, through the medium of our country programmes, which we expect to have the expertise for both types of work. With the increasing frequency and severity of emergencies world-wide the organisation is in the process of increasing its standby capacity to support programmes.

Part of that new approach was the creation of the Emergencies Section in 1999. Emergency Response Personnel (ERP) play a key part in the SC-UK emergencies strategy by being deployed at short notice for medium-term assignments of approximately three months at a time, providing emergency expertise to help programmes respond. ERP staff are based in their home country and generally spend more than 75% of their time on assignment. ERPs can also be deployed to support existing Save the Children country programmes or work from home on longer term projects, developing guidelines and manuals for logistics.
