Description:Introduction

Save the Children is the leading UK charity working to create a better world for children. We work in over 45 countries helping children in the world's most impoverished communities.

We are part of the International Save the Children Alliance, which aims to be a truly international movement for children.

Chad is one of the poorest countries in the world, with an estimated 80% of its total population living on less than $1 a day. Current internal instability in the east of the country has forced an estimated 180,000 Chadians from their homes. The conflict in Darfur has further added to insecurity in this region where an estimated 280,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed the border and now reside in refugee camps. As a result, competition for inadequate resources among existing local communities, internally displaced Chadians and Sudanese refugees is prevalent.

Save the Children began working in Eastern Chad in May 2007. In coordination with the Government of Chad, UN agencies and other NGOs, we are reaching a total of 35,000 children in Eastern Chad with programmes in nutrition, education and child protection.
