Mercy Corps has developed a comprehensive family of programs designed to inspire leadership and action among young people. By organizing and inspiring young people, Mercy Corps is enabling them to make a difference today, and become leaders for tomorrow. Our flagship youth program, the Global Citizen Corps, www.globalcitizencorps.org, is a national network of youth who mobilize their schools and communities to take action against global poverty, hunger, and conflict. Mercy Corps is also launching an Action Center to End World Hunger in Lower Manhattan, www.actioncenter.org and a second Action Center in Portland, Oregon in 2009. The Action Centers will feature highly interactive, media-rich exhibits that explain the complex causes of hunger and poverty and provide a platform for direct action. Through our global engagement initiatives and the Action Centers, Mercy Corps seeks to expand its teacher trainings, curriculum, and opportunities for classroom involvement. GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: The Education Officer (EO) is responsible for managing and growing relationships with schools and educators in the tri-state area to increase school participation at the Action Center to End World Hunger; coordinate educator trainings; and develop our curriculum offerings. The EO will design and implement educator programs, manage budgets, and coordinate program evaluations. The EO will also work closely with the Manager of Education and Youth Programs to expand our Educator Initiative and will serve as our main point of contact for our educator network. S/he will also work closely with the ESI design team to develop curriculum and workshops for school group visits to the Center and will train docents and museum educators. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Build a network and manage relationships with educators and schools in New York City and nationally. Maintain educator list of contacts. Provide regular updates to educators and schools for involvement in global engagement programming. Recruit schools for Action Center workshops and visits. Represent Mercy Corps at quarterly conferences and meetings and prepare presentations as needed. Design curriculum and materials for the Action Center, web and in-person trainings. Design, write and update global poverty, hunger, and conflict curriculum to NYC standards. Conduct research on international development issues and policies. Create lesson plans, fact sheets, quizzes, resources, etc. for the Action Center, actioncenter.org and globalcitizencorps.org. Collaborate with the Mercy Corps Action Center in Portland and World Youth Initiatives on curriculum offerings and trainings. Coordinate professional development trainings. Conduct outreach and schedule professional development trainings in the Action Center and schools in the tri-state area. Facilitate professional development trainings in Action Center and NYC schools. Train education staff as needed in delivering professional development trainings. Assist in the design and evaluation of educator programming. Design educator programs, manage budgets and support strategic planning. Monitor program to ensure outcomes are met. Evaluate educator program outcomes and prepare analysis and recommendations. Support proposal development and donor report submission. Other duties as assigned. Organizational Learning As part of Mercy Corps' agency-wide Organizational Learning Initiative, all team members are responsible for spending 5% of their work time in formal and/or non-formal professional learning activities. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: interns ACCOUNTABILITY: REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Manager of Education and Youth Programs WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Director of Programs, Executive Director, Web team, Public Outreach and Advocacy team KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: MA/S or EDM or equivalent in education, education policy, international development, and/or curriculum and instruction. 2-4 years' experience in education curriculum writing and/or youth development trainings. 2-4 years' professional experience with high school or middle school students; 2-4 years formal teaching experience in Tri-state area preferred. Strong understanding and knowledge of international development issues; minimum of 1 year of international experience. Excellent facilitation and presentation skills, including experience presenting to large groups. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (including Excel). LIVING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: This position is based in New York City and requires occasionally work after-hours and on weekends. |
