Description:The Belgian section of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is recruiting a

COMMUNICATION OFFICER
to work on information and communication matters with the operational department in Brussels, field staff in project countries and communication departments of MSF offices worldwide

Background
The Operational Centre Brussels (OCB) is one of the offices from which MSF initiates, manages and evaluates medical interventions around the world. The OCB provides assistance through around 100 projects in close to 40 countries.

As part of the communication department, the Combo team focuses on providing a constant stream of information on these interventions, supporting the field teams in their communication activities, and helping the OCB in publicising the plight of populations that we assist.

The job
Communication officers on the Combo team liaise regularly with operational staff working on (and in) a number of project countries. By following their contexts closely, they are able to contribute to MSF's temoignage and positioning, signal how communication can support the interventions, answer questions from MSF colleagues about the projects, provide information on new activities, and coach staff in the field and in the office in working with the media.

Though a communication officer spends most of her/his time in the MSF office in Brussels, the job involves assignments in project countries. As a rough indication, a communication officer will go to the field three of four times a year for a period of one to three weeks each. It is important that communication officers are able to travel on short notice, as a significant part of the communication activities stem from sudden emergencies.

The Combo team provides materials in English, but it is crucial for communication officers that they also read and understand French.

The ideal candidate
In order to be considered for this position, candidates need to demonstrate:
- a professional background in communication
- knowledge of how international media function
- excellent writing skills in English
- understanding of French
- solid understanding of humanitarian action
- a strong sense of initiative combined with team spirit

In addition, the following qualifications will be highly valued:
- experience in international journalism
- experience in photography or filming
- knowledge of online media
- professional experience in MSF
- proficiency in Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, or any other languages spoken in countries where MSF has projects

Interested? Send a letter of motivation as well as your CV to anne.missal@msf.be. Please mention "Vacancy Combo" in the title of your message. If you have questions about the vacancies, you can call the coordinator of the Combo team, Erwin van 't Land, on +32 475 661 342, before 9 August or after 26 August.

Applications close on 7 September, 2008.
