JOB CONTEXT :
Uganda has a landmine/unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination problem resulting from successive conflicts over three decades, including internal conflicts, conflict instigated by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and an overflow of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The most contaminated areas in Uganda are the border regions with the Democratic Republic of Congo and with Sudan, in Luwero district, the West Nile region, and the Rwenzori Mountains in the west (Kasese, Bundibugyo and Kabarole districts).

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Challenges and goals:
Following consultation between Handicap International (HI), the Uganda Mine Action Center (UMAC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) at the 9th Mine States Parties meeting in Geneva November 2008, HI conducted, in March 2009, a mine action assessment mission in Western Uganda.
The assessment mission confirmed the presence of mine/ERW (Explosive Remnants of War) and a significant socio-economic impact in Western Uganda which was not being fully addressed.
HI intends to assist the Ugandan authorities to prevent disability from contamination of ERW, protect most at risk groups until clearance and return is possible, and contribute to victim assistance.

Activities:
Your role will be to enhance inclusion of people victims of mines/ERW and people with disabilities (PWD) trough economic and social inclusion. Your main responsibilities will be to implement the project, to prepare the work plan, to launch an assessment of PWD needs, to ensure a strong follow up of activities and to ensure that key livelihood actors are able to provide services to PWD. You will also have to recruit and lead a team of 4 persons, do regular reporting on the activities and ensure a strong capitalization of actions.

- Income generating activities profile
- Training / coaching skills
- Excellent negotiation and adaptation skills to multi-cultural, multi-actor environments.
- Excellent organizational and coordination skills

Complementary:
- Team management
- Mine Action experience is a plus
- Experience with a humanitarian NGO is a plus

REQUIRED LANGUAGE SKILLS: English mandatory

JOB ENVIRONMENT:
Living conditions in Western Uganda: pretty good and quite comfortable. Possibility to rent house with all modern conveniences in Kasese + running electricity and water.
Security conditions in Western Uganda: safe.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:
Volunteer: 750 or 850 Euros monthly indemnity + living allowance paid on the field + accommodation + 100% medical cover + repatriation insurance
Salary: 2000 to 2300 Euros gross salary per month + 457 Euros expatriation allowance + 100% medical cover + repatriation insurance
